The 2006 Mustaches for Kids Ottawa campaign ended on Friday night with the force of a large atom bomb (or more accurately: 30 mustaches, which contains roughly the same amount of raw energy).
A rag-tag bunch of hooligans, our pool of growers this year demonstrated unmatched skills in both ’stachenicity and fundraisability - the two most important qualities to have when participating in Mustaches for Kids. As you can see on the right, we completely destroyed our fundraising goal of $5000 and as of this moment currently sit at a whopping $7340. I say currently because as I write this we still have donations trickling in from PayPal. Wow. Fantastic work guys!
I wish we could have crowned all 30 growers who competed (and those who couldn’t make it) as the Sweetest ‘Stache of 2006, but unfortunately that would take all the thrill out of seeing 30 mustaches go lip to lip in such fierce competition. All hail this year’s king mustache: young Robert Goulet (aka Mike Hollingworth). Mike just plain beat the pants off everyone else. What can I say? The man has an incredible mustache.
Check out some photos of the event! And if you have some photos of your own add a comment with a link so we can all share in the miracle that was the ’stache bash.
Just under two weeks left in the Mustaches for Kids 2006 campaign and that means that the ‘Stache Bash is nearly upon us. The annual campaign closer will be happening Friday, December 15th at the Royal Oak “on the canal” (Pretoria Bridge at Colonel By Drive).
Greetings, my fellow growers. Last week’s checkpoint was a great success (despite the last minute venue change) and I’ve been quite tickled with the dedication and follicular abilities of this year’s group. I am indeed dreading the day that I must face all of you in head to head nose-broom competition at the ’stache bash. But alas, I regress…
While it has been nothing short of a delight to see so many loyal growers enhancing their already fine looking mugs with the addition of a mighty ’stache, I must admit that I expected this considerable square yardage of fresh lip carpet to be blowing the doors off the proverbial “fundraising house” by now. Not to worry though. It seems as though this week (now that our mustaches are becoming visible to the naked eye) we’re starting to hit our stride so let’s not lose sight of those kids that our hard-earned dollars will go to help (even if they don’t always appreciate or understand what we’re doing). To aid all of you in your fundraising efforts, I have created yet another fantastic PDF document to stand alongside the pledge form - the M4K info sheet.
I encourage all growers to print and post several copies in their home, at their place of work and at their local hangouts. It gives a little background info on what M4K is about and basically explains why on earth you would voluntarily and intentionally grow such an odd arrangement of hair on the face. Hopefully it’ll help break the ice and get those inquisitive minds to dig into their pockets and cough up some cash! Best of luck and see you all this Friday at the Honest Lawyer.
Due to popular demand, we’ve resurrected everybody’s favourite feature from last year’s M4K site: the forum! A place to discuss, argue, encourage, put down, and generally converse about mustaches and all things pertaining to the almighty lip carpet.
Hats off to all the growers who have joined our ranks so far. By my estimations we’re up to 32 staches. That’s a lot of lip rugs.
Just a reminder that our first weekly checkpoint of 2006 will take place this Friday, November 17th at Irene’s Pub (885 Bank Street, just south of 5th Avenue). Hope to see you all there!
If you can’t make it for your weekly mugshot, you can email your photo to info@m4kottawa.org.
Check out the interview on CBC Radio this morning by our very own stachers Brett Tackaberry and Trevor Kealey. Trevor’s comparison of mustaches to icebergs is riveting.
Welcome to the 2006 edition of M4K Ottawa! We’re back on the scene with a new site (gracefully adorned by our 2005 champ, “Officer Brohman”) and renewed desire to help out those wonderful little kids that benefit from the hard working folks at the Make-A-Wish FoundationĀ® of Canada (Eastern Ontario chapter). For the uneducated, this is the 2nd straight year that a yet-to-be-determined number of grown men will be growing lip rugs over the course of 5 weeks to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. No, this is not a joke.
But we can’t do it without your help!Ā Please consider joining the campaign or making a donation (see our PayPal button on the right).
A new website has been launched to promote the Mustaches for Kids cause! www.mustachesforkids.org is chocked full of information and resources on the furry fundraising phenom that’s lighting the world on fire.
One of the founding fathers of the Ottawa chapter, Steve Palmer, created the site in cooperation with M4K NY’s Mitch Goldman. You can just feel the excitement building for the 2006 campaign!
There’s a mustache documentary called The Glorius Mustache currently taking America by storm! The film examines the resurgence of the under-30 ’stache by following around 35 guys who grow lip rugs for a month.
An encyclopedic volume of everything M4K - must have for newbies and veteran lip rugs alike. Includes the smash hits "Pledge Form" and "M4K One Pager"!
